In the wake of the Bondi Beach attack, a wave of misinformation has circulated online. Fact: Verified information from Australian and international sources confirms the attackers were a father?son duo residing in New South Wales: Sajid Akram (immigrated in 1998) and Naveed Akram (born in Australia). Official statements have not attributed Pakistani nationality to them. However, several Indian media reports and social media accounts falsely labeled the attackers as ?Pakistani nationals? or ?from Lahore?, claims that remain unverified by official sources.

International fact-checkers at the Reuters Institute noted that during crises, large volumes of misinformation can spread within hours, often amplified by television. The current narrative about the Bondi attackers appears to follow this pattern. In May, a major Indian Hindi news channel broadcast a false report with dramatic graphics claiming ?Indian forces enter into Pakistan,? which was later debunked; Times Now Navbharat faced criticism for this piece.

The misinformation also affected individuals such as Naveed Akram, who publicly asked people to stop circulating his photo as the shooter. While authorities act against terrorism, some media outlets persist in propaganda efforts to deflect domestic challenges by maligning Pakistan. The international community should scrutinize and reject fabricated news designed to sow discord and damage Pakistan?s reputation.
